There are people -like myself and many members of my family- who simply naturally read fast.

But you can read fast with full comprehension! People in my family and myself do it. So you get plenty of people arguing that reading fast is bad, or you cannot understand what you read, bla bla bla. The big problem, every time this subject is broached, is that the definition of speed-reading is never clear! If there is a lot of conflict or tension in a book that feeling is even worse, so I'll read even faster until it is resolved. It's just that, when I'm reading something I like, I really want to know what happens next. There is really no motivation to say I've read so many pages or so many books in a year (I actually find telling people stuff like that kind of embarrassing). I remember having pop quizzes on books like The Great Gatsby in high school and being one of the only people to remember the color of the light on Daisy's dock.Īs far as why people speed read, I definitely don't do it intentionally. This can backfire occasionally in terms of reading comprehension (for example, sometimes I'll picture a character completely differently from how they are described because I missed something), but usually I have better comprehension than most.

I also sometimes skip around the page and gloss over descriptions. I guess I just SEE the words instead of reading every single one. Unless I just can't get focused on the text, I don't read aloud in my head. It's taken me a long time to realize exactly WHAT I do to read so fast, because I guess I'm entirely self taught. When I can really concentrate on a good book without interruptions I still fly through them. By first or second grade, I could read 100 page books in an hour or two. Like many others have said, I started reading young and I read A LOT. I don't know that I'm a speed reader, but I definitely read really fast.
